Seriously? Nay, verily........

Okay, so there's a joust here in San Diego County this weekend....and....well....I'm going! I almost titled this post, "Surely you joust" (you know, like surely you jest, but with jousting) but a better title would have been "People are Weird."

Oh, not the people who go the ren faires and dress up and ride on horses with armor and all that. Those people are cool. (My attempt at a YA takes place partially at a ren faire, which is why I am going. Research.)

But the point of my post is that ALL people are weird. I mean, isn't it strange the things we are drawn to as individuals? Some people like dark things, some people love butterflies, some love history, some love video games....I could go on and on....but I won't. I just thinks it is, well, weird the way we are drawn to the things we like. What is it about certain things that call to our souls? For most writers, the topics they choose are ones they are inexplicably drawn to, those things that call to them.

But why? Why does the thought of going to a joust totally jazz me, whereas the thought of watching the Chargers lose again (see....I'm a bit nervous posting this because I don't even remember if they lost or not....not caring that much) does not one thing for me? Why does the thought of seeing all of the castles of Ireland make my insides all quivery? Why do I secretly want my own falcon?

I could go further....why do I hate green vegetables but love fried okra? Why do I love mornings and foggy days? Why do I hate it if the TV is on in the afternoon?

See?

People are weird.

Oh well.

I would love to take my kids to watch a joust! I've always wanted to have dinner at Medieval Times or go to a Renaissance Faire but I haven't done it yet. Too bad we're not near San Diego this weekend.

It IS weird! There's so much stuff involved in the choices we make, from experiences we had as children to personality characteristics to who knows? Like I'm so introverted, going to parties or anything involving big crowds I don't enjoy but others do.

Have fun at the joust!

I'd love to go watch a joust. How exciting. Enjoy. And I hope you get a great deal of research done.

Love the joust ;) Really. When I was a reporter I covered the big ren fair several times and saw the jousts, swordsmen, singing wenches, Green Man, Shakespearean players, etc. So much fun.
But what I loved most about this post was that you secretly want your own falcon. How cool is that???

What a neat thing to do this weekend! Have a great time--and be careful where you step (because of the knights with their weaponry and the treasures their horses leave behind). ;)

You make very good points. People are wierd, and there is just no rhyme and reason for our likes and dislikes. I went to the Ren Faire with my family earlier this month, and my son came away chanting "eat that pie!" Yes, we missed the joust for the pie-eating contest.

Oh please tell us what the jousting is like! I've always wanted to go to one of those festivals. I'm weird but I guess I'd fit right in!

Sherri-I've never been to Medieval Times either. But this was a real joust, not an acted out one. So cool.

MG-Not much of a party person myself...

Susan-It was pretty wild....lances splintering and all.

Tricia-No falcons today, but oh well. It was just so...I dunno....random to go to a joust on a Sunday afternoon....still processing.

Dawn-I did not step in non-buried treasure, but I could smell it the entire time.

Jessie-No pie eating today, just guys in gleaming armor.....

Amy-It was pretty much exactly like the jousting in the movie "A Knight's Tale." I half expected the crowd in the stands to start up with "We Will, We Will Rock You."

My son would absolutely LOVE this.

Also, I just watched the movie Role Models this weekend and it's so dumb and wrong, but features a fake kingdom where people go to role play medieval times and battle. It was a terrible movie, yet kind of hilarious.

I love that people are weird. Keeps life interesting.

But the weird or the diversity makes life more interesting, right? You are MY kind of weird.

And there's an award waiting for you over at my blog, if you're interested.

Shelley, lucky you to find a way to go to a jousting match and make it tax deductible. I can't wait to read what you do with the experience. Ren. faires are a time/mind warp anyway, and so much fun. Did you go in costume? Bill Murray, in the movie, Ground Hog Day goes one step further and says, "People are morons, people like blood sausage..." Quirky does make for good reading...

COOL! I would love to go see a joust! I like things like that too :) When we went to Disney World years ago, my parents took us to one of those themed dinner things where they serve you medieval food and you watch a show. They didn't have a joust but it was pretty fun. There was also an Arabian Nights themed dinner. Unfortunately they don't have cool things like that where I live! Hope you have fun!

Sports bore the heck out of me, but I can acknowledge they bring great happiness to many people. The saddest thing to me would be to be married to someone who wanted to spend all our vacation time and weekends at sporting events to support his favorite team. Not because the games would be so dull to me but because that would be time I'd want to invest in doing other things...seeing the world...experiencing LIFE!

any veggie is good if you slather enough batter on it and then deep fry it. :)

L and L- yeah, I like that people are weird...and, uh, my whole life is kind of a fake kingdom.

Myrna-Aww...you are so sweet. I hope some of my goodluckcharminess rubs off on you!

Richard-Naaah, no costume. See, I have to dress as The Story Queen pretty much every day at work...weekends are Queen-free.

Julie-It was a full-on joust! So cool. Those guys in the armor were hardcore!

Tess-Truer words were never spoken.

We go to the joust every year. And I have this fab idea for a YA that takes place at a Renn Faire.

I knew we got along for some reason. :)

Oh, and see.. I actually really liked the movie Role Models! (but that might be because I have a crush on Paul Rudd)

Carrie-I'm halfway done with my YA Ren Faire novel....hehehe, mine will be finished first!

Corey-Okay, now I HAVE to see Role Models!
