Two Feet, Two Worlds, One Person

It's funny, but whenever I am with a group of teachers, I feel more like I am a writer.

But wheneveer I am with a group of writers, I feel more like I am a teacher.

Two different worlds.  Each one an enormous part of my life.  Each one pulling on me to jump all the way into its ocean.

And yet...

When I am wading out into the one world,
I feel more like I belong in the other.

Maybe it's that never-all-the-way-fitting-in-thing from childhood that I've somehow managed to carry along into my adult life.  I mean, hasn't every kid felt this?  (Hello....Harry Potter?  Not at home in the muggle world, but doesn't fit in with the other wizards.....yes, I DID need another Harry Potter reference, since you asked.)

Anyway, that's where I am today.  Today I am a teacher......
but I pick up a shell and the ocean of words is calling to me.

Just calling.

What a beautiful post, Shelley!

I've felt that way more than once. Maybe it's just a natural part of being a strong person who doesn't fit easily into a box...

I feel similarly--I have a life in medicine and one in writing. And the same goes for me too!

Good one! I feel the same way about the mommy world and the writer/artist world.

At least we don't have to choose one or the other!

Great post! I'm in one world, chipping away at the glass wall to the other. It's beginning to crack ;)

Beautiful blog. Loving the crown! I once tried to "expline" this to someone about compartmentalizing who I am because I am so many different things. mother, author. On top of it I am hard of hearing so I have always felt a part of two different worlds, the hearing and the deaf but not quite fitting into one. So I told joked with someone saying "I'm just a mutt." They turned quickly to me and said "Nah girl, your a diva!" Boy oh boy how I beamed. LOL. Fun stuff. Take what you have and always be diva!

Sherrie-I wonder if it is that way for all writers....

Lydia-It helps to know that I'm not alone!

SF-True about the choice.....you're right. It is a very good thing.

Julie-Oh, you'll make it through, Julie!! Impossible not to!

Angela-A diva mutt!! I love it. (Sounds like a picture book!)

You have one foot firmly planted in each world. You definitely belong in both. No need to choose. :)

Gosh, you really have a way with words Shelley. You should totally write a book!

I know what you mean about straddling two worlds. It's never easy is it? I think most of the other moms at the playground think I'm CRAZY. And I'm sure our blog buddies get sick of hearing stories about my kids. It's kind of like leading a double life. Someone needs to create a superhero writer. Mom by day, bestselling author by night!
