To Tiara or Not To Tiara.......

On Saturday, June 19th I have been invited as a guest author at a fundraiser for Rolling Readers, which is a wonderful program that pairs volunteers with struggling readers. (It's kind of a schwanky thing...wine, cheese and such...)

Anyway, I was very honored to be asked. Janelle Cannon (Stellaluna)
will be there. AND Gerald McDermott!!!

I heart Gerald McDermott. (I am secretly hoping to sit next to him so I cal tell him how much kids love his books. I mean, he probably already knows, but I've read his stuff to kids a BUNCH of times and well, it just really resonates with children.

So, the dress for this event says, "Creative Cocktail Attire."

What the heck is that?

Usually, when I appear as an author, it is as the Story Queen....cape, velvet gown, plastic crown....but somehow that doesn't seem quite right for such a schwanky event. (And I don't think any of us are doing a reading, per se).

The question is: Tiara or no Tiara?

I'm leaning towards a rather tasteful tiara, maybe something black and simple in terms of clothes.....

But is that just over the top?

You tell me.

That sounds like creative cocktail attire to me, but I'm not an expert on dressing for swanky events! Whatever you wear, it sounds awesome!

Simple, subtle, you don't even have to wear a tiara you could just wear a fancy headband or wear a tiny tiny one weaved into your hair. It's your style, your character, I think you should do what feels right to you.

And Stellaluna was my favorite book as a little kid, your post made me want to go back and find my copy...thanks for the flashback.

I think the tiara would be fabulous, so long as the rest of your outfit is really tasteful. That would be very tongue-in-cheek. Or tongue-in-chic?

I went to a wedding once where the dress code was simply "creative attire". I ended up wearing my mom's han-bok (traditional Korean dress, in pink) and it was a huge hit!

You are the Storyqueen. You must wear the tiara! With a cute cocktail dress.
This sounds like an amazing event!! HAve fun!

I never can figure out those code names for attire. But if it's an artsy crowd you get away with more.
I love both of the books you put up. How cool to be part of this event!

Oh, definitely the tiara. :D

I say "Tiara." You have to be true to yourself no matter what the venue :)

A tiara and classic black sounds exactly like the definition of "creative cocktail." And how cool! Arrow to the Sun was one of my absolute favorite books as a kid.

The storyqueen can't be seen in public without her tiara - that would be criminal! You are royalty and are expected to be dressed appropriately. LOL! :-)

Hmm...I'd do a nice cocktail dress and then something special, like a tiara, long gloves, big diamondy blingy jewelry...(I'd probably ask someone who is going to be sure.) Have fun!

Myrna-I am no expert either!!!

Hayley-If I weave something in my hair, will it look like I'm trying too hard to look...well...you know....young? Hmm....

Lydia-I love creative attire, I just hope my understanding of the term isn't too....off.

Kelly-definitely leaning in that direction.

Tricia-I mean, I might as well try it....I can always stuff it in a bag, I suppose...

Stina-That's what I'm thinking.

Corey-Yay! Another vote.

LT-Arrow to the sun is one of those books that kids just LOVE!

Shannon-Yay! Another vote!

Sharon-Hmmm...gloves....and a big fat ring....Love it!

Remember, if the tiara is too "off" you can just take it off and stuff it into your purse!

Found your blog via Winded Words. Couldn't resist your question - yes, definitely tiara! It will be a great way to start conversations and people will remember you.

"Creative cocktail attire" - I love it!

I'll have to check out that Arrow to the Sun book for my kids.

Ohhh, Rolling Readers! I interviewed with them when I lived in San Diego. Such a great program.

Tiara, for sure! Have fun!
