Why Everyone Needs a Head Lamp

Yesterday all of the power went out.  I mean, really went out. No street lights, no nothing.

It was supposed to be Back-to-School Night at my school, but of course it had to be postponed.  So, when I finally got home (horrible traffic) I was trying to figure out what to do.

DO NOT OPEN THE REFRIGERATOR was the command from my husband.  ONCE YOU LET THE COLD OUT, EVERYTHING WILL SPOIL.

Not knowing how long the blackout might last, we ate pretzels from the pantry for dinner.  (Luckily the neighbors came through with campfires and smores and hotdogs for the kids.)

But I  have this miserable cold and just didn't feel like socializing. So my husband gave me his headlamp (for, of course, he is prepared for stuff like this.  Me?  I've got a plate of five tea light candles I'm carrying through the house.) And I got to sit and READ.

There were no revisions to work on.  No email to answer.  No paperwork on the computer to do because we were totally cut off!

It was a little bit lovely.

P.S.  This has nothing to do with anything, but I noticed this recently when I was reading TAKE CARE, GOOD KNIGHT to some kids.  Look...right THERE:
LOOK!  I am selling icecream to the Good Knight!!! There I am!  Right in the middle of my own book!
(I bet Paul didn't even know he put me there!)

What a cute picture of you and the Good Knight!

I sympathize with you and your power outage. We went three and a half days without power after Hurricane Irene. Yeah, you can keep the fridge closed, but it doesn't help after 3 days (and it leaks). Had to throw everything away. And it smelled. Ugh.

But I did enjoy reading 13 Gifts by booklight. A Head Lamp would be even better!

That last bit made me smile.

I let the kiddos watch a movie tonight while I read, and it was lovely. I'm glad your husband was prepared (and willing to share).

Our power went out for two full days in the summer. It was crazy. But we went to the movies an hour away for A/C and played board games for hours. I agree, it was nice to be unplugged from everything. (but everything in the fridge spoiled :(
And I was like you, tea lights! I couldn't remember where any flashlights were (my husband is gone during the week). And he owns a headlamp too! :)
LOVE that THE Storyqueen is illustrated in the book!!! :)

It would be nice to have a headlamp for those middle of the night writing ideas. It's hard to hold a mini flashlight while trying to hold a notebook and write.

I have a head lamp! Sort of. It's a mag light on a strap that fits around my head. And candles galore. Our power goes out on a regular basis from winter storms. I love being forced to go offline occasionally.

Losing power is always sort of cool since it forces you to get cretive fast - especially if you have kids around.

Love the headlamp image...

Forget a head lamp~ just invest in a high-quality light saber :) Too cool that you're selling ice cream in your own book!

And there you are!

Power outages make me realize how much I love modern civilization.

LOL, my husband has a headlight too.

I really want a generator. We've only had our power go out a couple times, but I worry about the sump pump in the basement...

That is so cool that you are in your book!!!!!

I'm so glad you made it into your book. What fun!

I have no headlamp--just a bunch of candles and no matches.
