But then I thought of something I really wanted:
Notre Dame. Could it be any lovelier? |
I wanted her to take a picture of a gargoyle at Notre Dame Cathedral (in black and white, for I like black and white photography best) so I could put it above my desk.
Yes, believe it or not, in addition to Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones, apparently I've got a thing for gargoyles.
Noel accomplished her task well. However, I had completely forgotten about printing the picture and getting it framed until the other day when I saw gargoyles at Target. (I love their Halloween gargoyles! Might have to add a new one to the collection.) So I rushed home and opened up the file in my computer.
The problem?
I can't decide which gargoyle!
This is the fierce, eagle gargoyle! Listen, you can almost hear him shrieking. |
The dog-gargoyle twins. I have named them Fred and George. Notice the mis-shapen ear? |
This little beauty is ready to pounce! |
This guy is totally trying to eat that tree, poor little hungry thing. |
So, which gargoyle will get to live in the antique retro-looking (or perhaps shockingly modern) frame above my desk, frightening off all distractions?
Help me decide.

What a great idea for a great gift! The twin dogs are my favorite.
I like the pouncer one because he's a little creepy (like most gargoyles), but he also has this kind of vulnerable look about him--like he's saying, "I didn't really ask to be here." He looks ready to jet, and I'm not sure if it's to fly after somebody to violently protect the cathedral, or to escape to Tahiti. Good reminder to create three-dimensional characters :)
I like them all, but the first one may be my favorite.
I like the third one best. It is the most appealing as a photograph. Good balance. And I like that I can see more detail from the side than the front.
I like the last one because he's reaching for a goal. And after hundreds of years he still hasn't reached it. Okay, kind of depressing. Don't choose the last one.
I vote for the pouncing beauty! I can see that picture hanging above a desk and providing all kinds of inspiration. The dog ones are a touch too . . . sad.
2nd to last, hands down (or beaks or claws)
Gorgeous photos. Voting for "pouncy" #3. Fourth one is a little, er, well let's just say it invokes some Freudian thoughts ;)
Ha! I love Fred and George.
I climbed Notre Dame took photos, too. Someday, I'll find one and send it to you as well. You can never have too many gargoyles. (I can't wait for you to read my fairy tale someday, cuz, well, gargoyles)
The fact that you just mentioned Star Wars, Harry Potter and Gargoyles in the SAME post pretty much makes you boss. :) How amazing that Noel studied in Paris! I studied in London for a summer month during college and it is definitely one of the best experiences I've ever had. I think the pouncer gargoyle is my favorite, but they all look so creepy-gorgeous!
Tough decision...
(My dad loves gargoyles too. I put some out for Halloween!
I say Fred and George!
Oooh love the pic! Have you read Sarah Beth Durt's YA gargoyle book? I heard her read from it (Enchanted Ivy) at a con and it sounded very interesting.
Thanks everybody! I think I am going with #3...although I might get a smaller print of Fred and George to hang around someplace that needs bad things scared away.
